Emergency Warning Signs Every Dog and Cat Owner Should Know

Most health issues in pets develop gradually and can safely wait for a scheduled appointment. A smaller set of symptoms, however, point to a problem that can become life-threatening within hours — recognizing them quickly is often what determines the outcome.

Signs That Mean "Go Now, Don't Wait"

• Difficulty breathing, prolonged gasping, or blue-tinged gums and tongue
• A distended, hard abdomen with unproductive retching (a classic sign of bloat in large-breed dogs)
• Seizures lasting more than a couple of minutes, or repeated seizures
• Collapse, extreme weakness, or inability to stand
• Uncontrolled bleeding, or a deep wound after a fall or road accident
• Suspected poisoning — chocolate, rat poison, human medication, or an unknown substance
• Straining to urinate with little or no output, especially in male cats
• Sudden, severe pain — a pet that is crying out, trembling, or won't let you touch a specific area

None of these require a phone call first if you're close to help — get moving, and call on the way if you can. Every minute matters in true emergencies like bloat, poisoning, or breathing distress.

Signs That Can Usually Wait for a Same-Day or Next-Day Visit

• Mild vomiting or diarrhea in an otherwise alert, active pet
• Slight limping without visible injury
• Reduced appetite for less than a day
• Mild itching or a small, non-spreading skin irritation

These are still worth a vet visit — they just don't require an emergency room at 2am. If any of them worsen quickly or are paired with lethargy, treat it as urgent.

What to Do While You're on Your Way

• Keep the pet as calm and still as possible — excitement and movement can worsen bleeding, breathing distress, or bloat
• Do not give human medication (including paracetamol/ibuprofen) unless a vet has explicitly told you the dose
• For suspected poisoning, bring the packaging or a photo of what was ingested if you can
• For a wound, apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth — don't remove an embedded object

A critical-care team that can act immediately on arrival — oxygen support, IV fluids, and monitoring already in place — makes the biggest difference in exactly these situations. Keep your emergency vet's number saved, not searched for, so you're not losing time when it counts.
